EOLOGIX-PING is an Austrian-Australian scale-up offering sensor solutions for continuous wind turbine blade monitoring. Driven by a vision of a sustainable future, the company fits perfectly into EIC Scaling Club’s Renewable Energies group.
What’s the secret behind EOLOGIX-PING’s success, and what are the company’s plans for the near future? To learn more about that, we spoke to the company’s Co-founder and CTO, Michael Moser, and Head of Marketing, Esther Jobst.
Sustainable solutions for a green future
EOLOGIX-PING addresses several critical challenges in the wind energy sector, including lowering maintenance costs and enhancing wind turbine performance through increased efficiency. In the day-to-day, their solutions ensure continuous monitoring that provides crucial insights into turbine blade health, allowing wind turbine operators to respond to and anticipate any issues.
EOLOGIX-PING’s solutions also enable faster reactions to damage caused by various weather events. For example, a lightning strike or a storm can damage a blade – sometimes unnoticeably. The team's solution helps wind turbine operators quickly spot any issues or drops in efficiency and react accordingly.
“We keep wind turbines turning with blade monitoring to power clean energy,” says Esther, spelling out the core mission of EOLOGIX-PING.
It’s a straightforward message that has resonated with operators. With many industry leaders as clients, Esther points to the scale-up’s “easy-going” products as a major point of attraction for operators – their solutions are self-powering and communicating and don’t require any third-party data to function.
Mission over miles and time zones
The team behind EOLOGIX-PING is quite diverse both in terms of expertise and location. On the latter, it’s crucial to note that EOLOGIX-PING is a merger between two companies – the Austrian-based eologix sensor technology and Australian company Ping Services. The merger happened in May 2023:
“This experience taught us how to effectively collaborate across diverse cultures and time zones, proving that even as a relatively small company, we can operate with a global mindset,” says Michael.
All of the founders behind today’s EOLOGIX-PING have vast technical backgrounds combined with notable experience in wind energy. The team eagerly unites in commitment to clean energy and does everything it can to ensure the scale-up’s blade monitoring solutions help the industry overcome the challenges of maintaining and optimizing wind turbines.
Today, EOLOGIX-PING is a global team of nearly 50 professionals across five countries. The scale-up has a presence in Austria’s second-largest city, Graz, and a team in Adelaide, Australia. The company also employs several workers across America and Europe.
Despite successfully implementing the merger, Michael admits it wasn’t easy at first: “We were two relatively small companies making a bigger company while having a nine-and-a-half-hour time difference. There were many things to do in terms of bureaucracy and collaboration, both practically and technically.” However, EOLOGIX-PING turned these challenges into a chance to become stronger, focusing on open communication and the team’s commitment to the cause.
“Our shared mission for clean energy transcends geography. Both teams, though distant, converge on the same objective.”
Thriving through adaptability
Our discussion of EOLOGIX-PING's journey inevitably touches upon the challenges the scale-up has faced. “Our success is significantly influenced by the dynamic interplay of global and political factors. We've navigated recent challenges, including the potential supply chain crisis and the scarcity of electronic components. Our operations are impacted by diverse government policies and economic conditions across different regions of the world,” Michael explains, adding that the European Green Deal makes the scale-up very hopeful.
The company has greatly benefited from collaborative projects looking at new and green technologies and sustainable energy. However, Michael tells us that the rapidly changing political and economic landscape, particularly in the US, presents significant uncertainties for the company.
“The dynamic and unpredictable nature of the modern world makes it increasingly difficult to anticipate shifts in legislation, administrative factors, and other external circumstances, which now evolve at an unprecedented pace.”
Esther adds that EOLOGIX-PING’s approach to the turbulent pace of the industry is to remain flexible and monitor the company’s markets. Michael agrees that the company has used its learnings to thrive: “We have a proven ability to quickly enter new markets and become active players. Our relatively small size allows us to remain agile and adaptable. We can swiftly identify changing market conditions and adjust our strategies accordingly. This is in contrast to larger corporations, which may take significant time – sometimes even years – to recognize shifts in market demand.”
From milestones to future plans
When asked about the scale-up’s key milestones and latest achievements, Esther shares that, in 2024, EOLOGIX-PING significantly increased its portfolio and can now offer more efficient lightning monitoring services. Additionally, the company has widened its presence in Scandinavia, with 14 wind farms in the region now using EOLOGIX-PING’s solutions. The company has also received certification for its on-blade sensor in Japan, which is necessary for entering the market.
Of course, the merger has been one of the key milestones in the company’s development. This has allowed them to establish a comprehensive rotor blade monitoring portfolio to help wind turbine operators effectively address a wider range of challenges.
As for the future plans, the scale-up aims to increase its portfolio even further to “really tackle all of the challenges in rotary blade monitoring,” says Esther. She adds that EOLOGIX-PING aims to put its energy into the U.S. market: “We aim to be recognized as the trusted partner for rotor blade monitoring solutions, expanding our market presence.”
EOLOGIX-PING and the EIC Scaling Club
EOLOGIX-PING was among the first 48 European deep tech scale-ups that joined the EIC Scaling Club. “It was a great pleasure and honour for us to be selected by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency as one of the candidates,” says Michael. He adds that there’s another Austrian company present at the Scaling Club the team knows well from its early days and that “it’s nice to see others make the same path”.
Similarly to many other EIC Scaling Club members, EOLOGIX-PING is particularly fond of the access to the valuable network of mentors, investors, and stakeholders provided by the Scaling Club. Michael emphasizes that, while operating in different industries, innovators often encounter similar challenges. Engaging in collaborative discussions with these peers, even without direct competition, can foster mutual learning and accelerate innovation.
Additionally, the scale-up appreciates access to advisors provided by the Club. “Access to capital is always key if you want to grow,” says Michael. “We’ve made revenue from the beginning, but growing always requires more capital, and growing fast requires even more. So all the advice on how to access the capital and where to look for it, that’s very useful for us.”
