Teraki interview

Introducing Teraki – a German scale-up on a mission to accelerate the global adoption of next-generation autonomous systems prioritising safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

This EIC Scaling Club’s Smart Mobility group member develops software for AI-based sensor data pre-processing at the edge, enabling autonomous mobility for vehicles, robots, and trains. Teraki’s products can smartly and efficiently select the relevant information of large amounts of sensor data in a lightweight manner and on edge, leading to safer and more reliable autonomous applications.

Teraki's innovative product suite

Since its founding in 2015, the company has been driven by a vision of a future where intelligent autonomous mobility is a reality for everyone. Teraki has continued building innovations within the fast-paced AI sector ever since.

In the first years after Teraki’s launch, the company focused on working with automotive brands. In 2020, the scale-up decided to replicate its success in new fields such as robotics, drone, and rail markets. Today, the company continues to work with several industries and offers them four innovative products – T-Video, T-Lidar, T-Radar, and T-Fusion.

T-Video is an intelligent video processing product that uses machine learning to pre-process video and image content and prioritizes crucial visual elements while minimizing data used for less essential areas. T-Lidar is a machine learning software that helps to enhance object detection and segmentation, reduces data size, and lowers processing power requirements, allowing for real-time performance and faster decision-making.

Teraki’s T-Radar is a radar performance software that uses machine learning to improve the accuracy of radar data. And last but not least, the fourth of the scale-up’s products – T-Fusion – is a software development kit that allows developers to build applications combining various data.

In essence, Teraki’s products help customers train and improve their AI models quicker and more accurately while dealing efficiently with the exploding amounts of edge data. Scale-up’s AI-driven solutions transform low-power hardware into intelligent edge devices capable of extracting critical information from telematics, cameras, and 3D point clouds in real time. With high-accuracy object and event detection and deterministic, certifiable edge processing, Teraki is paving the way for safer and more efficient autonomous systems.

Growing out of quantum roots

The scale-up’s origins can be found in quantum computing research, as its co-founders, Daniel Richart and Markus Kopf, are the former Max Planck Institute of Quantum Mechanics researchers. Daniel dedicated five years of his academic career to his PhD at the Institute, mentored by Nobel Prize-winning atomic physicist Theodor W. Hänsch. During this time, he delved into the emerging field of quantum computing until he came up with a business idea that eventually led to the establishment of Teraki.

Today, Teraki has around sixty employees in Berlin, Tokyo, and Luxembourg. The scale-up’s team members have experience in fields such as data science, software development, and more. Hence, Teraki comprises knowledgeable and experienced professionals, all driven to bring innovative solutions to markets and industries worldwide.

Future outlook

In April 2024, Teraki was among the first 48 European deep tech scale-ups to join the curated community of the EIC Scaling Club. In July of the same year, the scale-up announced that it had registered a new office in Luxembourg to facilitate the deployment of AI-powered autonomous vehicle solutions. As explained by the company, the choice to be present in Luxembourg signifies the scale-up’s readiness to make the vision of intelligent mobility a reality. The EU country holds many assets, including participation in standardization bodies, which can speed up Teraki's time-to-market.

While Teraki has been present beyond Europe’s borders for a while now, including a presence in the U.S. and Asia, the scale-up is determined to accelerate the development of the automotive and mobility sector in Europe through Teraki’s innovations.
