As for Smart Mobility, Europe is at the forefront of the global shift towards sustainable and intelligent transportation. The Smart Mobility market roadmap reveals that “Europe is a breeding ground for smart mobility scale-ups [despite] facing dense international competition and having to overcome highly fragmented regulations”.

Europe is responsible for 28% of the global VC funding in mobility funding in 2023 while leading the debate when it comes to global early-stage funding in the industry. Moreover, European startups in the Smart Mobility sector raised $9bn in 2023 making it the third most funded sector behind energy and health.

While Europe boasts a leading role in smart mobility funding and innovation, challenges persist.

Among the most pressing hurdles are:

  • the acute shortage of skilled workers – 81% of Club members reported difficulty in hiring qualified personnel,
  • the fragmented regulatory landscape – irregularities across European countries are hindering innovation and impeding the growth of companies,
  • the looming shadow of US competition – characterized by rapid deployment and robust venture capital support, it makes it more challenging to keep up,
  • And more.

With that in mind, the report underscores that, by working together, European companies can overcome these challenges and solidify the region's leadership in the global Smart Mobility market.

Europe's scaleups are already driving innovation, and find themselves at the forefront of the industry in areas such as autonomous charging, connected car technologies, drone delivery, shared mobility platforms, and more. Furthermore, advancements in technologies such as hydrogen and high-energy-density batteries are opening new avenues for innovation, paired with the increasing demand for sustainable, convenient, and efficient transportation solutions, points to the massive potential and impact of Europe's innovations in shaping the global tomorrow.
